Difference between Plain and Smart

Post by sargonvi »

Good afternoon,

I am misunderstanding Plain versus Smart images. My understand is that Plan allocates full disk space on the physical drive, and Smart only allocates what has currently been written to it. That makes sense to me, however in relation to Dynamic Memory Management, it appears to me that Plain allocates the full space into memory no matter if that is checked or not, and Smart loads dynamically.

I am using the following settings, maybe i am doing it wrong... If anyone could please help me understand, otherwise i will just switch all my plain to simple:

Basic settings:
Disk size: 10240 MB
Disk type: SCSI
Drive letter assigned: J
One-time disk: No

Substance settings:
Memory size: 10240 MB
Memory features: DMM
Drive file size: 0 MB
Drive file name: -

Image settings:
Enable image file: Yes
Image file name: V:\Steam_B.vdf
Load/Save functions: Load & save
Delay Load mode: No
Load in background: No
Image format: Plain image
When to save: Save at shutdown, Timing save
Quick Save mode: Yes
Backup automatically: No

Edit: I should note that the very moment the drive is created, it works as expected (Plain loads dynamically) it is not until i load the image again that it allocates it fully into memory, instead of dynamically.

Well on further testing, it seems to also happen with the Smart images as well, it loads what ever the size of the image is. I am not sure if this is something to do with Windows 8.1 or what, but would appreciate any suggestions to get the DMM working as it was pretty much the reason for me getting Primo over the competitors.

During the loading of the image file to the ramdisk, RAM has to be allocated to hold image file data. If you really want both the image file feature and the dynamic memory management feature, you can enable the "Delay Load" option.
