bluescreen with ATI driver install

I had consistently reproducible bluescreens when using fancy cache on a fresh install of windows 7.
Install windows 7
install fancycache, activate w/ delayed write 10s on boot drive
install ATI catalyst driver suite
At the point where the install would normally unload the graphics driver and load the ATI catalyst driver the machine blue screens and reboots. Disabling fancycache during the install process avoids the bluescreen entirely.
basic machine specs:
core i5 2500k
ASUS p8Z68-VPRO (onboard graphics disabled, onboard sound disabled)
16gb ram
patriot wildfire 120gb ssd (boot)
intel mirror set as a data volume
ATI radeon 6870
